6 breathtaking beaches in Kenya

Kenya is one of the most interesting countries in east Africa. With its majestic animals and life-loving people, I would generally recommend going there. Yet, not many people would think of Kenya as a beach holiday destination, but in fact, Kenya has many beautiful beaches. Bordering the Indian Ocean, the country’s east coast offers beautiful white sandy beaches in contrast with the dark blue ocean. The tropical climate makes it a perfect destination for a beach break. So next time you plan a beach holiday, keep in mind these 6 breathtaking beaches in Kenya.

Nyali beach is one of Kenya’s best beaches that offers a calm and relaxing ambiance. The beach is located in Mombasa, surrounded by magnificent beach resorts that offer deluxe accommodation. Apart from the normal beach activities that you can do around Nyali like sunbathing, swimming and playing with sands and building sandcastles, it’s also a good location for surfing.

Located 56 kilometers north of Mombasa, Kilifi is a much smaller and more tranquil beach town. Apart from its beautiful beaches, Kilifi is also known for the ruins of Mnarani, including mosques and tombs, dating from the 14th to the 17th century. Go to Mandharini beach bar to watch the sunset while sipping on a delicious cocktail.

Diani is the most popular and one of the most beautiful beaches in Kenya. This long stretch of beach is located on the Indian Ocean coast, 30 Km south of Mombasa. The beach provides a tranquil haven where you can relax and enjoy the warmth of the sun. Diani is renowned for its coral reefs, underwater sandbars, and widespread palm vegetation.

Lamu Beach, located on Lamu island, is one of the more cultural beach resorts. A Dhow competition – a traditional sailing competition – is held in Lamu every year. Apart from enjoying the white sandy beaches and the deep blue sea, this town also offers many historical sites. It is a popular destination in Africa with a lot of luxurious resorts.

Watamu is known for its local reefs, clear water, and soft white sands. The beach offers a great swimming opportunity, gives you a delightful feeling and the alluring ocean gives an amazing sight. You can engage in some beach activities such as surfing, sunbathing or take a long walk along the shores.

Malindi Beach is one of the most famous among a list of beaches in Kenya and also a popular spot for capturing typical Kenyan beach photos because it is where explorer Vasco Da Gama eventually landed in Africa. Offering an amazing climate, beautiful views, and plenty of hotels for a perfect staycation near the crystal-clear water, it is indeed one of the liveliest beaches in Kenya. Popular activities on this beach include sailing, windsurfing, deep-sea fishing, and snorkeling amidst the coral reef south of the town center.
